About Joyful Solutions

Joy is an energetic and innovative emeritus professor who set up ‘Joyful Solutions’ in 2017, offering coaching and mentoring, education consultancy, staff development and conflict resolution.

​

She has come from a background in academia and university leadership. Originally trained as a research scientist, Joy lead a research team at St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical School (now Barts and The London), publishing over 100 research papers and winning more than £1 million of research grant funding.

​

Joy has held a range of university posts, including Dean for Postgraduate Studies and Deputy Dean for Students at a medical school. She set up and ran the Doctoral College at QMUL and also established the Ethics of Research Committee at QMUL. Before leaving the HE sector, Joy was the head of staff development at a Russell Group University. She has been closely involved with the Athena Swan agenda, supporting the development of women as leaders in Higher Education, and is an Athena Swan assessor.

Joy has gained a wide range of experience from her time in the HE sector. She is an experienced researcher, teacher, trainer and leader. She is skilled in curriculum development, doctoral training, communication skills and staff development. Joy has always used a coaching approach to management and is highly experienced in coaching and mentoring, with a strong interest in supporting BME colleagues and women. At QMUL Joy was a member of the mediation team and is experienced in resolving conflict in the workplace.

As a writer, Joy has published textbooks on hormones and contributed chapters to medical textbooks. She has also written ‘Goat’, a scholarly exploration of the relationship between goats and humans, published by Reaktion Books.
